Hot Stamping Process in Packaging Design

Dec 26, 2022

Definition of hot stamping (bronzing)

Hot stamping, also known as hot stamping, is a printing decoration process, which is to heat a metal printing plate, apply foil, and emboss golden characters or patterns on printed matter.

Generally divided into two types: hot stamping and cold stamping; hot stamping: refers to the subsequent process of transferring gold foil to the surface of the substrate through a certain pressure and temperature. Cold perm: refers to the method of transferring metal foil to the surface of the substrate directly on the printing machine with UV printing adhesive. Since no heating is required, it is called "cold perm".

Hot stamping has two main functions: one is to decorate the surface and increase the added value of the product; the other is to endow the product with high anti-counterfeiting performance, using holographic positioning to stamp the trademark logo to prevent counterfeiting and protect the famous brand.

Hot stamping (bronzing) color

There are many kinds of hot stamping colors. In addition to the common gold and silver, there are also green gold, blue gold, red gold and laser gold, etc. The color foils provided by different suppliers are also different.

Application of hot stamping (bronzing)

The area of hot stamping is generally relatively small, and it is commonly used in logos, brand names, etc., and is mainly used in covers and packaging.

It is mainly to improve the grade and highlight the key points, and it is suitable for paper, plastic, wood board and leather.

Precautions for hot stamping (bronzing)

1. The size of the hot stamped text should not be smaller than 7PT, otherwise there will be blurred edges, and smaller Song typeface characters cannot be used.

2. The finished product is broken (cannot be printed), and gold dust is dropped on the surface (not printed firmly). Most of these problems are caused by low temperature, short time or insufficient pressure.

3. Hot stamping can be divided into hot stamping and cold stamping. Compared with hot stamping, the effect is better and the cost is high, while the effect of cold stamping is slightly worse and the cost is low. It depends on the size of the hot stamping area.

4. Generally, hot stamping is hot stamping after the film is applied; cold stamping is a second protection after the hot stamping is completed, and then a layer of film is applied. After the film is covered, the metal texture will be slightly worse, and the light perception will also be reduce.
